Festival de Cannes

Following the French President’ statement, on Monday, April 13th, we acknowledged that the postponement of the 73rd International Cannes Film Festival, initially considered for the end of June to the beginning of July, is no longer an option. It is clearly difficult to assume that the Festival de Cannes could be held this year in its original form.

Nevertheless, since yesterday evening we have started many discussions with professionals, in France and abroad. They agree that the Festival de Cannes, an essential pillar for the film industry, must explore all contingencies allowing to support the year of Cinema by making Cannes 2020 real, in a way or another.

Some history...
The first International Film Festival opened on 20 September 1946 after an interrupted attempt in 1939. The atmosphere was light-hearted after the years of war and movie stars couldn’t wait to discover the region’s charms. In 1954, a young American actress, Grace Kelly, came to the Côte d'Azur with Cary Grant to shoot a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. She participated in the International Film Festival the following year and met Prince Rainier of Monaco. They were married on 22 April 1956, the day before the Festival opened. In 1955, when the Palme d'Or made its debut, it also marked the birth of a French star and the symbol of a liberated, natural woman - Brigitte Bardot.
